3D Design - Day 1

Structure, construction, formation, height, fragility, form, foundation, improvisation, invention, shape - were the words that circulated my mind on day 1 of 3D Design. 22/09/13
Thinking fast on your feet was very important!
We began the day by finding innovative ways to come up with unique designs for purpose based products. These tasks have extremely helped me in experimenting, thinking out of the box and improvising. It has boosted my confidence levels very much!
In the morning we were asked by Geoff to draw a random squiggle on the page -in which we then had to create a 2 people and a cat. Another task was to draw our favourite fruit -which then had to be transformed into a rabbit hutch. Loose but creative ideas started to pop into my head, giving me the chance to come up with something completely different to what you used in seeing everyday.
Structure 1:
The first structure we were asked to make was out of paper! This focused very much on the structure of the design, but also the aesthetic qualities it should include. With just one piece of A1 paper, and an arms length of masking tape we had to come up with a structure to hold up a filled water bottle. We had to create something different and innovative -not just a stable cylinder or square that can hold the water bottle.
As a result, I came up with an abstract concept with a highly detailed foundation -creating a zig zag effect. I must admit that I considered the aesthetic qualities more than the purpose and function of this design.
Form = Function
Therefore, in the end my design/structure was not able to withstand the weight of the water bottle and collapsed. I enjoyed this task very much, as we transformed 2D design ideas into 3D models.

Our second task was to come up with something even more creative than the last. We were given 4 sheets of corrugated cardboard to create a flatpack structure that could hold a person at 50cm high in an hour an a half.
My design was simplistic and straight forward -the triangular shapes withstand heavy weights.
Next time I would like to experiment a bit more and be more daring with the structure and design.
Today was an eye-opening experience. I learnt how to come up with unusual structures which still attempt to fit the brief.

The initial bottle holder that you created would work great as a design for a building. Where you have photographed the structure with the small figures it creates a sense of perspective and shows how it would look if modelled as a building design. The technique you used when creating the structure to support a body I think looks interesting on its own and if it were to be taken further, it would be interesting to see how it would look with the use of alternative materials, such as heat bent acrylic to create the triangular shape of the structure.
